I'm often mesmerised by the container boats heading out to sea. Watching these huge ships become small specks on the horizon and wondering where they are going?

No. 31. The lurid sky

The lurid sky. 2008
Oil on linen panel, 14.6 x 14.6cm (5 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches)
SOLD
The lurid sky: Standing at St Kilda Beach north of Adelaide waiting to take a photo of the sky, a man on his evening walk stopped in my view and looked up to admire the lurid evening sky. I couldn't help thinking if he was aware the sky's heightened beauty was only the result of pollution? The city of Adelaide is between the coast and the hills. It's pollution is often trapped by the hills then blown out to sea adding to the beauty of the sunsets.

The Big Top, 2008
Oil on linen panel, 14.6 x 14.6cm (5 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches)
SOLD
Driving back from an unsuccessful photographic trip I caught sight of the circus set up on the outlaying fringe of the city. It was too dark by then to do anything about it so the next night I made my way back to there hoping that they haven't packed up and moved on. There is something so wonderful about seeing the circus in town, some of my earliest memories as a kid are of being taken to see the magic of what goes on under the big top.

No. 26. On the beach

On the beach, 2008
Oil on linen panel, 14.6 x 14.6cm (5 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches)
SOLD

A few weeks ago I saw the movie "On the beach", starring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner, filmed in 1959 in Melbourne, Australia. It's about Melbourne being the last place left waiting as the world is ending. Ava Gardner was rumoured to have made the remark describing Melbourne as "the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world". Not so, she has never been to Adelaide. I couldn't help thinking about this movie as I was painting Dianne on the beach and also thinking how much better it would be to move Melbourne.
PS The No. 26 on the post is for Dianne, who for some reason is obsessed with the number 26 and this is after all, the 26th small painting.

No. 19 The Parched Land

The Parched Land, 2008
Oil on linen panel, 14.6 x 14.6cm (5 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches)
SOLD
The start of Autumn saw a record heatwave in Adelaide of 16 consecutive days above 35 C and most of them above 38C ( 100F ). The studio became too hot to work in and most afternoons/evenings I drove into the countryside in my airconditioned car. Hoping to find something to paint to salvage the time lost at the easel, I kept turning up to this rocky outcrop of dusty parched farming land. Sheep would sometimes stagger by coughing dust that was once topsoil. I'm sure they'll drop dead of fright should a drop of rain land on their heads.

Painting this small work brought back a lot of fond memories of last April when Dianne and myself spent a few days at Byron Bay. It was so good to catch up with some friends and just taking time to chill out in an new enviroment. Each morning I awoke to take photos of the sunrise from our hotel the Summerhouse and the view was spectacular. I have written about the trip on my other blog ( including photos ) Part 1 & Part 2

Into the Night
Oil on linen panel, 14.6 x 14.6cm (5 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches)
SOLD

This small painting is a study for a series of nocturnes of Melbourne streets, of which a few will be in my upcoming exhibition at Charles Nodrum Gallery, Melbourne, in July 2008. Driving down Toorak Rd, South Yarra heading towards our hotel, taking photos, avoiding the traffic and having a near miss with a tram, it was worth it.

No.7. last Light

Last Light,
Oil on linen panel, 10.2 x 20.4 cm (4x8 inches)
SOLD
When I'm in the landscape photographing a spectacular sky I also make sure to look behind and often I find a second view worth painting. In this case it was of the last light touching the landscape. This particular day I was in luck, not only did I get several paintings from the sky ahead, I also fluked a shot of a muscle car speeding into the sunset (Lets go out tonight), which became one of my favourite paintings.

No.2. The Long Journey Ahead

The Long Journey Ahead,
Oil on linen board, 12.7 x 12.7cm (5x5 inches)
SOLD

Often when I go out photographing the sky at the beach I see boats heading out to sea. On this occassion the large container boat was dwarfed by a huge brooding mass of clouds and confined to a slender slither of bright yellow sky on the horizon.
Titled The long journey ahead, I can't help but see it as a metaphor for one's own artistic pursuits.
